Cicada

A cicada freshly emerged from it's exoskeleton rests after years underground feeding on tree roots. Cicadas spend from 2 to 17 years underground, depending on the species (globally there are 3400 cicada species). In July/August in the midwest U.S. they make an overpowering buzzy hum which I associate as one of the sounds of late summer.

The cicada is modelled by Amy, who located the insect while climbing a tree.
