Dipping for red salmon in Alaska

Last week I posted a photo of a section of mud flats on the Kenai River, and wrote about the personal use fishery that takes place the last couple of weeks of July. This is when millions of red salmon enter the Kenai River from Cook Inlet, heading for their spawning grounds in various smaller rivers and streams.
The water in the background is Cook Inlet, and these people are on the side of the river mouth opposite of where I took the mud flats photo.
The extra photos are: #1 Got one! #2 This is how long the net handles are, and there is a rule about how big the net can be.  #3 Looking across the mouth of the river to people fishing on the other side. The mud photo was taken to the left of this location on a big bend in the river.
Maybe next week I will have time to go down to the beach and get some close ups. As residents of Alaska, we could participate in this fishery, but we don't because it's too crazy and we are not big salmon eaters. Thirty years ago we used to go down there with a small net and we were the only ones on the beach. Times have changed.
