further update from a local - the true story - it won't get published in the press!:
a drunk Polish man in his 30s was larking about pretending to be in trouble.
someone on the beach called the Coastguard.
the man was embarrassed, had to be restrained by his rescuers, and invented another swimmer who, after several hours of searching was obviously never accounted for.
as i think i said in a comment, sun, booze and the sea are best not mixed.

my tried and tested recipe for teaching young people not to cry wolf is:

to rescue them.
properly.
rush in.
drag them out,
and only stop short when it comes to administering CPR.
(the possibility of broken ribs would be a step too far)

the several children that i've had to do this to never forget the experience and will probably pass this lesson on in a similar manner, because it's frightening and it works.  indeed some of them bring it up all these years later and thank me and understand why i did it.

while i'm on the subject of safety on beaches: NEVER throw stones, other than into an empty sea, & obviously, never climb cliffs.
it's not rocket science, just common sense.

hopefully, the Coastguard team, boats, and helicopter were not needed for another genuine rescue when this idiot was wasting enormously expensive resources because he thought it was funny to pretend he was in difficulties.

this makes me so cross :-/
