First day in Berlin. Slow start in the morning (even though there was some early morning arguments between the boys due to extreme boredom). Then trip to the German Museum of Technology. This was wished for by boy #2 - but we always really enjoy it too. The museum is on the grounds of the former freight train station - Anhalter Bahnhof. The locomotives are housed in the original engine sheds and the grounds are still full of old bits of the station although the main parts were destroyed during the war. We got a tour of the classic German Diesel loco. Really cool to get inside and wander past the engine. We also checked out the photography department (we were all impressed by the spy cameras) and had a tour of the museum brewery (just for show) and the chemistry department. We also spent a lot of time in the sugar exhibition which was really super interesting. Basically it showed how sugar from sugar beets was developed and is now used as basic starting point for new materials (ie plastics but not based on mineral oil). Highly recommended place to visit. We stayed until the museum closed. Then some wandering around town and tired back to the flat. More pics from today on flickr.

I should add, the picture above is of a sugar beet harvester. They had videos of it in action. Really impressive. It pulls out the beets, cuts of the greenery, shreds it and ploughs it back under whilst storing the harvested beets in a big hopper. So many moving parts...
