Coot Family

Another busy day working in Derby, but I found time for a quick lunchtime walk to Alvaston Park.

The coot that I watched on May 14th building a nest in a very vulnerable position near the edge of the lake has finally abandoned home, but plenty of other coots there have successfully raised chicks this year.

Most of the young coots are near fully grown now, but I came across this particularly large family of six chicks that must have been one of the last to hatch on the lake this year.
