Germany Day 5 - In Search of Hermann's Dinkle

The extra shows the band at last night’s gig. As you can see it’s at the bottom of a field. A bit like Glastonbury but without the mud. They were appearing on the main stage carpet with a backdrop of wind turbines. They had another very appreciative audience and did two encores. We arrived back at the hotel well after midnight with just enough energy to climb into bed (trashing the room might have to wait till tomorrow).

After breakfast this morning we went off to look for a big monument to Hermann. He wasn’t quite as lost as the legions but there were a few more closed roads with no obvious diversion signs. Hermann sits on top of a big hill and looks down on the region with his sword held high. He was built as a National  monument to the emerging German Nation in the middle of the nineteenth century.

Word of the day - Hermannsdenkmal, which means Hermann's Monument. We irreverently read it as “Hermann’s dinkle” whenever we saw it on road signs. When a member of the hotel staff politely asked us what we’d been up to during the day we almost said we’d been to see “Hermann’s Dinkle" but just managed to stop ourselves in time. I saw the word auspuff on a sign outside a garage which fitted new batteries and exhausts. Still not spotted “hamster”!!

I’m rushing to write this blip entry because as all rock bands do when on tour we’re off to a riotous party tea and cakes at the home of one of the fans.

More tour news later.
