Acts assemble!

To the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh's George Street, reopened after a £9m refurb. The Stand Comedy Club is mounting a brace of Fringe shows and EdiSteve and I were lucky enough to be invited along. After an introduction by Stand chief Tommy Sheppard, the showcase got underway.

This colourful bunch go by the name of Brazil Brazil and their show is Latin Live. Steve was rather taken ...

Also on the bill were Goth comic Damian Crow - good gags and a squeezebox.

Glen Wool, Craig Campbell and Stewart Francis combine stand-up acts for Return of the Lumberjacks - funny Canadians with hidden choppers.

Poet Liz Lochhead - charming.

Stewart Lee - funny, then uncomfortable as he did that thing some comics do when they thinks the decent laughs they're getting aren't a good enough response - derailed himself. He pretty much turned on the audience of media folk, told us we weren't his consituency and was generally sour in a passive aggressive way.

Kristine Levine - US comic obsessed with her weight and nether regions; Jo Brand did it 20 years ago, but with some wit and charm.

Dublin's Lyric Theatre gave us an intriguing, well-performed extract from their musical Molly Wobbly's Tit Factory.

Camille O'Sullivan is a Fringe legend for her manic chantoosery. I've never seen her. Now I have.

And holding things together, the lovely and dapper comic Phil Nichol.

So, one or two of the acts I rather fancy, a few I'd watch if Steve dragged me, and a couple I'd cross the road to avoid. But if you're in Edinburgh, I do recommend having a look at the Assembly Rooms website - it's safe to say The Stand is offering something for everyone.
