Everything Comes From the Egg

Finsley Gate Wharf in Burnley - on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal - has lain derelict for many years - but has now secured £2m Lottery Funding to be regenerated.  Whilst all the work 'behind the scenes' is going on - it is currently the home of the Exbury Egg.
The Exbury Egg is a “temporary, energy efficient self-sustaining work space for the artist Stephen Turner”.
It was previously located in the estuary of the River Beaulieu, tethered like a boat to rise and fall with the tide. The Egg is “a place to stay and a laboratory for studying the environment, a collecting and collating centre with integral storage and display areas”.

Each half of the egg is made of two Cedar wood skins with a membrane in between to make it watertight. 8km of wood strips were used in its construction. It is wider at the rear allowing room for two storage cupboards either side, and a very simple bathroom.
The residency in Burnley is the first stop on a national tour for the Egg. It will visit four venues throughout 2016-2017, including Trinity Buoy Wharf London, Aspex Gallery Portsmouth, and The Jerwood Gallery, Hastings.
