US Holiday Day 13

Burney to Lake Tahoe
Was surprised today with McArthur-Burney Falls State Park. We had not seen this on the maps or Google, it was only chatting to the motel desk guy that pointed us to it. These falls are astonishing, the river appears out of the rocks from springs, only a little way from the falls but 100 million gallons flow over it daily On the right side of this shot can be seen water coming directly out of the middle of the rocks at the falls. These were featured in the film Willow.
A little way past the park is the railway bridge that took a starring role in the film Stand By Me. Daughter two was very excited about this and we went to find it, with total success. I had not seen the film so it was not that exciting. The road bridge we stood on to take pictures of the rail bridge was exciting as it bounced and swayed every time a truck went over it, rather worrying. D2 also plunged into the wood to try and walk on the bridge, recreating the boys actions, but it was barricaded off, probably to stop people walking on it.
Moved on to the Lasson Volcanic Park. The last eruption was in 1916 and a series of photos of this were taken by a lady photographer and feature largely in the park centre. Although there were no eruptions when we were there we did find boiling bubbling mud holes and gas jets forced out of the ground. All around these were warning notices to keep out (not necessary for me) and an aroma of rotting eggs from the sulphur.
The road took us over a pass more than 10,000 above sea level at the Mount Lasson trail-head. In a shady corner of the car park were the toilets, the doors at the front opening directly onto the car park. The rest of the loo was still buried in a snow drift making it look as if you were walking inside the drift. It was christened the Igloo-Loo and several other words that rhymed were also used, such as "do" "poo" "Sue" etc. plus giggling. I thought I had mature and sensible daughters. I was wrong
We continued our drive, breaking it at McLaughlins Road House, Crescent Mills. Very impressive sounding but only a red truck parked on the side of the road with seats and umbrellas out side. They did make the thickest milk shake I have ever had, very nice. As usual we were asked where we can from and were surprised the lady knew Norfolk as her first husband was based in Lakenheath.
When we got to Lake Tahoe we found our accommodation was right on the lake side with fabulous views(extra picture from the balcony). It was a wooden chalet type building probably from the 1970's and needed a lot of TLC to bring it up to date. The owner, a German lady, of considerable years, has probably lived in it since it was built.
The other two extra pictures are there because I liked them.
