Tappan Zee span

On Sunday, I made a return visit to a part of up-state NY where I spend a lot of happy days in the summers of 1983 and 1984. My first contact with Tarrytown, on the banks of the Hudson River, was through J-1 programme which made it possible for me to work at nearby Marymount Collage. I discovered that the college still stands but now function as a language institute rather than a third-level college.
Tarrytown's dominant physical feature is the Tappan Zee bridge which spans the Hudson River. It was built in 1954 and then carried about 40,000 cars per day along its three-mile span. Today it carries 138,000 cars per day and its steel is in danger of failing.
So an amazing project is taking place beside it where a replacement bridge is being built to cantilever on the Hudson. The three-year build is due to finish in 2017 and will cost somewhere between five and six billion dollars!

It is expected to last 100 years!
