Bikes have never been in the news so much. Heavy-handed arrests at the Critical Mass ride in London last Friday, Wiggins' gold medal (and Armistead's silver and Froome's bronze), and a so-far unidentified cyclist killed by a bus near Olympic Park yesterday. And now a galloping debate about helmets and road safety.

If only they weren't invested with so much hope and fear.
