The tree must be one of the originals on this street and I'm glad it was allowed to stay when the newer building below it was built.  On the corner is an information sign headed with Kia Ora, an informal greeting like hi in Maori.  There is a map with the location of restaurants and a little history of the town.  
I have an extra syllable in the second line :-)  Off to see Evita performed by the local musical theatre group tonight.  One of our teachers is in the chorus.
