The gold records, the break-up of the band, the unsuccessful solo career, being dropped by the record company and, eventually, reinstatement as a much-loved older statesman of rock. He and that guitar had been through it all together. He would bring her out and talk about her in the middle of his "words and music" shows. How he had saved and borrowed to buy her. How he had played her on the all the big hits. How she had outlasted his band-mates and wives. How he would never be parted from her.

Except that, going through the boxes of stuff from the old days, he had come across the first publicity photos of the band - all moody stares and clear skin - and, yes, there she was! But the scratchplate was the wrong shape and the inlays on the fretboard were different...
