Northern Chief @ Dungeness

It was time for a trip to the seaside, and even the weather agree as we had blue skies and sun for most of the day.

We started at St Mary's Bay between Romney and Dymchurch, with a picnic lunch watching overlooking the sandy beach.  We were struck by the number of large family groups enjoying a meet-up: one in particular had even bought along 2 kettles on stoves to supplement the champagne being poured out.

We then followed the coast road westwards and ended up at a very busy Dungeness, and a terminus of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.  Here massive changes seem to be afoot: the tiny little wooden station building and attached house containing a cramped cafe has transformed into modern glass and metal building extension.  It's obviously only recently opened and needs some more work and "bedding in" - but the facilities are certainy better even if has perhaps lost some its traditional feel.

While there, we were fortunate to see one of the little steam trains arrive, the Northern Chief built in Colchester in 1925.
