Louise - Changing Natures

#IWill #DaySeven

A morning that was in turn inspiring, humbling, unifying, energising and satisfying. But it was also shocking and has led to lots of reflection and discussion.

We spent it volunteering at the Pine Villa School, situated in one of the most deprived areas of the city, where virtually every child is entitled to free school meals and "welfare".

Our job was to clear old computer kit and classroom furniture out of some portakabins that are due to be demolished. The school was jawdroppingly run down and much of the kit we were moving of really poor quality. It all fell so far below any kind of standard we would find acceptable in the UK, it was hard to comprehend. The inequality of life here writ large.

The volunteers we were working alongside were nothing short of inspirational - young people from Key Club and returning veterans from an amazing not for profit called The Mission Continues, plus some incredibly dedicated teachers.

It was pretty backbreaking work in scorching heat but watching how the team made it all come together was a thing of beauty. The conversations held alongside with the volunteers were so incredibly insightful. It was an experience which will stay with me.

This evening we all attended dinner with "home hosts" - the chance to spend time in family homes with people who are dedicated to service and volunteering. Such warmth, generosity, openness and kindness from all - so wonderful to share lovely conversations over fabulous food. Cultural exchange indeed!
