Unwelcome Tenants

I decided to check inside the Flicker nesting box yesterday to see if the wood shavings and chips were still dry, though it's obviously too late to expect any nesting this year. This is what I found when I removed the lid. I didn't fall off the step ladder, but I did get down quickly.

They are European Paper Wasps, and are supposedly aggressive -- I didn't discover this until later -- but these didn't seem to be, even when I went back this evening and placed my iPhone very close to the nest to get a few photos.

They will not be welcomed next nesting season!
