West Approach Road - Bruce Peebles

These transformers are part of an electricity substation for Edinburgh's city centre, on the site of the original late 19th century Dewar Street electricity generating station. I rather like both keeping them visible from the road and the use of Scottish Power's corporate colours on the equipment to make them a feature.

Bruce Peebles was the founder of an Edinburgh industrial electrical engineering company in 1866. In the 20th century the company specialised in building transformers for power stations. The main manufacturing site, the East Pilton Works, suffered a major fire in 1999 and sadly the business did not recover and closed with significant job losses a few years later.
