Good old Byrhtnoth, who, with his thegns led the English against a Viking invasion. He was known for his "ofermōd" literally meaning "over-heart" or "having too much heart" or possibly over-ambitious. He fought the invading Vikings at the Battle of Maldon and lost the battle, lost his life and lost his head. He now stands tall at the end of Maldon Prom. A lovely walk at the end of a busy week. I wonder, can you have too much ofermōd?
