4,000 years ago...

4000 years ago hunters made rock carvings on the smooth rocks next to the rapids in the river.  At that time this rapid emptied into the sea, which is now 80 metres lower and many kilometres away. There are around 2300 of these carvings here so those people spent a lot of time doing them.  No-one knows why but the most common motif is the moose.  The people here ate a lot of moose and even more salmon!
The annual music festiva, Urkult, have taken one of the carving, of a boat with crew, and woven it into the band that is crimped onto our wrists to show we've paid our entry.
This band is about 1 cm wide and really rather beautiful.
