The Straight Mile

This is a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal at Burnley known as 'The Straight Mile'.   When the canal was built in 1800 it was decided to build an  embankment taking it right through the town centre rather than follow the contours of the terrain.  This resulted in 'The Straight Mile', which is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the canal network.
