Lagoon

When the Bullhouse Colliery was closed in 1918 water from the underground mine workings flooded into the River Don and contaminated the water with a bright orange sludge called ochre which choked the life out of the river.
The Bullhouse Minewater Project started in 1998 cleans the water before it reaches the river.
The contaminated water is pumped into the lagoon and the ochre settles to the bottom of the lagoon and the clean water is siphoned into the River Don and life has now returned to the river.
