A great Whitstable Character

I noticed this gentleman at the harbour in Whitstable. His name is Derrick West a third generation Fisherman who has been fishing for oysters, whelks and cockles for over 67 years. Now aged 88 he still works hard at his family business of West Whelks at the quayside in Whitstable. The stall was filled with an assorted of sea water goodies including local oysters and crab. Great little video here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1BVx92NNers
In the morning we had breakfast in a cafe in Tankerton. I was surprised there was still one there as I remember going there with my brother to have either an Icecream soda or a sundae when we were children which must be over 40 years ago. The tennis courts were also still there but the little amusement arcade where we played on the penny slots is now a designer kitchen shop.
We walked along the front in the sunshine and out on to the street, a stretch of shingle that goes a mile out in the sea as the tide goes out. Up to the 'Castle' where we waited in the rose garden for my cousin and her children to arrive. We had a drink and abit to eat in the cafe and then went to the play area.Harry, Chloe and Hannah had fun on the play equipment and after an icecream and a visit to the beach it was time to say goodbye.
We spent the afternoon exploring the harbour area. The sun was very warm by now and we found a few shady seats to sit on and watch the world go by. Lots of families were crabbing on the harbour wall getting buckets full of crabs of various sizes. We bought a few nice pieces of local pottery, well we had too ;)
For dinner we had fish and chips overlooking the sea.
