Cheviot Charlie

A gloriously sunny, warm, blue-sky day - spent most of it in the office, but joined MrM and Louie for a walk around Wooler as soon as I got back from work.

We passed the effigy of Cheviot Charlie - as we often do - which is on a wall at the top of the Peth by the Co-op (formerly the Wheatsheaf Hotel). Cheviot Charlie, whose real name was George (Geordie) Ridpeath, was an entrepreneur and, by all accounts, a bit of a character who lived in Wooler from the 1940s. Apparently he used to take a box of chocolates with him when he went to country dances, and would share them out during the interval. He died in 2002, aged 89.
