Greyling

The Greyling likes sunny heaths and the fringes of woodland so we tried to find some on Chobham Common today. There are not many about but when you find one you can usually stay with it as they're quite territorial. They're not too shy either and they'll happily settle on your shirt.

They're wonderfully camouflaged too on tree bark. I've never seen one settled with its wings open but they will occasionally flick out an orange wing tip with its black eye-like dot (see the extras). I'd guess this is a defensive measure aimed at startling a possible predator.
