Dig Appleby

A gorgeous, sunny afternoon and I spent it inside perusing old documents.

Appleby Archaeology Group has recently received a grant to carry out some research and excavation in the hope of shedding more light on the history of Appleby. Called ‘Dig Appleby’ the project involves local people in aspects of surveying, research and excavation, by providing training, and opportunities to use the skills learned.

There has already been one ‘Big Dig Weekend’, but not something I could take part in at the moment. Gordon went though and had a great time digging, under supervision. I have opted for some Archive Training Events and today was the first one. A workshop, designed to introduce us to basic palaeography skills and help us gain some confidence in transcribing old documents, it was well led by an expert and was fascinating, but challenging. A great brain exercise and nice social occasion at the same time. It was really a matter of preparing us for a later visit to the Archives in Kendal, where documents relating to Appleby will be provided for us to examine.
