New Place

The refurbished New Place gardens opened today to the public, with free entry for us locals. The knot garden and great garden have been overhauled including the sculpture trail.  A new reception garden and visitor's centre has been introduced, accessible by a new entrance on Chapel Street.

New place was Shakespeare's home in Stratford for nineteen years where he lived with his wife Anne and daughters Susanna and Judith, and son Hamnet who died young.  After Shakespeare's death the house was demolished and rebuilt, then eventually demolished leaving only the grounds.  It is next door to Nash House where Thomas Nash and Shakespeare's grandaughter Elizabeth lived, this building is still standing and is linked to New Place.

The picture is of the sculpture of Macbeth, part of the sculpture trail.
