The Call Of The Running Tide.

A visit to Leith by the Frigate Schtandart, en route to the North Tall Ships Regatta where, setting sail from Blyth in Northumberland, she will cross 500 nautical miles of the North Sea to Gothenburg in Sweden.

An exact replica of the man-of-war built by Peter the Great in 1703 in order to defend Saint Petersburg, this vessel was built as a fully functional tall ship in 1999 - recreated from technical drawings commissioned in 1988 by The Hermitage to recreate a model of this ship as no contemporary blueprints survived; a formidable three-year task undertaken by historian Viktor Krainukov.  So November 4th, 1994, 298 years since the foundation of the Russian Navy, a modest keel-laying ceremony took place in Orlovsky Park, with the ship launched six years later.
