6000 pineapples in Gaza

The Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) in the Gaza Strip goes new ways to contribute to larger amount of food security and productivity for the farmers. The farmers have severe challenges under the occupation and the blockade. The war destroyed most of the farmland and the water apply, and in large areas all the houses got totally crushed by bombs.  The ongoing electricity crises makes it hard to get enough water for the plants.

The Palestinian creativity and resilience to survive under harsh and life threatening condition is amazing. This August UAWC started a pineapple project. Pineapples can survive with small amounts of water and can be one of the solutions that can make it more easier to survive as a farmer under occupation.

My friend Saad from UAWC explains that the 6000 new planted pineapples will be ready to harvest in 18 months, and each plant will bring 3-7seedlings for carry on the production. The pineapple plants come from a successful project in Tulkarim on the West Bank.

We are all excited and congratulate the people in the organisation for their creative ideas and guts.
