10,000 Years of Trade

We went for a drive at sunset in search of a blip. What we found was Wy'East rising into the dusky sky in the background and the view of a ten thousand year old trading center in the foreground. This photo was taken on the Washington side of the Columbia River.

The site of what is now the city of The Dalles was a major Indian trading center for at least 10,000 years. The general area is one of the continent's most significant archaeological regions.[6]

Wy'east, Nch’i-Wàna and Win-quatt are Native American names for Mt. Hood, Columbia River and The Dalles, respectively.

The Columbia and its tributaries have been central to the region's culture and economy for thousands of years. They have been used for transportation since ancient times, linking the many cultural groups of the region.

Fish—especially the salmon species—provided the core subsistence for native peoples; in past centuries, Indigenous peoples traveled across western North America to the Columbia to trade for fish. (wikipedia).

The blip search was a delightful excuse for an adventure at day's end!
