Lawn Freesias

We are not really into lawns of closely clipped grass. Between the street and the front of the house is Council "verge" of 6m, and then about 6 m back to the house. (Not allowed to be any closer) We have planted the Council land with NZ flax bushes, Little Johns, and other small shrubs. There is a bit of grass in between. On our piece of the road frontage we were required to plant three trees that will end up being quite large, as in the renovations three medium sized trees had to be removed; one was a totara which would eventually have become a giant tree and was only about a metre from the house; the previous owners didn't think about the long term, obviously. While the trees we planted are growing there is some grass between and around them and the few fruit trees also planted there.

Between the deck and the point of land out to the cliff edge is a small area, shaded almost all day long by the pohutukawa trees, and straggly grass struggles to survive between the fallen leaves and twigs. At this time of the year the freesias burst forth and give a dash of colour. The freesias have spread here from mother-in-law's adjacent home, as she has had many growing there for more than twenty years.

I saw and photographed these flowers this afternoon. I was thinking about doing a bit of journal reading before taking an early finish, when S rang to tell me that she had been contacted by the hospital to get her to take her mother back home to Snells Beach. Knowing that she is in the process of writing the exegesis for the Creative Writing thesis she is doing this year, and therefore very busy, I told her that I would take her mother home. Easy for me as I was already at the hospital. So I was able to see and photograph the freesias, before heading back to Auckland. Where S is preparing me a lovely meal.
