You may have noticed that I love exploring this little village on the Northumberland coast. Before 1806, you would have had a completely different view from here of a bustling and thriving little port.

Indeed you could walk in the dry from here to the village. A fierce storm put paid to that and the flow of the river was completely altered [extra].

To get to the point where I’m standing (in front of St Cuthbert’s cross, atop the hill) you now have to make a detour of about three miles back down the coast and then down a rickety track and over the sand dunes.

At low tide there is still a bridleway from here to the village, but I’ve only ever seen it (successfully) attempted on horseback...
