Reading for book group

This month we're reading two books, both of which had authors appearing at Edinburgh International Book Festival.  This is one, which I'm finding really trying to read.  I can't decide whether it's supposed to be funny, in which case I'm missing the point, or serious, in which case I get that, but it's just so sad.
