Schloss Schönau

Schloss Schönau is a small moated castle in the German town of Richterich, City of Aachen.

The glory Schönau was in 1244 by Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire to Heinrich von Aachen transferred as property. Hendrik van Aken, treasury custodian of Aachen, awarded the assets to the family Von Schönau, which after the acquisition of the castle and Schön Forst area in the first half of the 14th century, also called von Schön Forst.

In 1396 became the moated castle Schloss Schönau and the surrounding area a glory of the Duchy of Jülich. It remained as the basis glory in possession of a branch of the Van Vorst Clean family (German: Von Schonau) and was inherited by the Van Donk Mille family, who kept it from about 1450 to 1695. By marriage to the glory land came to the family Von Blanche.

The current building of brick stems largely from the year 1732. It was built by the then owner Johann Gottfried von Blanche, designed by the Aachen architect Laurenz Mefferdatis.

Today the castle is owned by the city of Aachen and has been used as a restaurant.
