Live Long and Prosper

Captain's log, Stardate 09/09/1966. This evening, the first episode of Star Trek aired on U.S. television. The birth of a cultural phenomenon. More than just a T.V. show, Star Trek was, and still is, an optimistic manifesto for a rational, secular, humanist future of cultural diversity and the pursuit of intellectual and spiritual advancement over material acquisition. It's a powerful and deeply edifying vision that has endured for half a century and will, I am sure, outlive the cynical "entertainment" currently so fashionable in these jaded times.

May the great bird of the galaxy rest upon your shoulders.

Space. The final frontier.
