The Big Flood in '53

Holland is a country that is mainly artificially created by building dykes and draining out the water using windmills, aka… we are a flat country mainly below sea level.

During a big storm in 1953 the dykes couldn't resist the water pressure and collapsed, allowing the sea reclaim the land.

Many houses, or more specific… entire townships were drowned and many who survived became instantly homeless.

Thanks to the generous gift of Sweden and Norway's population donating many wooden houses the needy Dutch were helped wit a roof over their head.

The nice thing to see is that these houses are still around and inhabited in the provinces of Zeeland and South Holland.

I spotted these Norwegian Aid Houses in the town of Puttershoek.

Have a nice weekend!
