MonoMonday - Traditional

Our neighbours invited me to go on a trip today to Schärding, which is about 15km from Passau, with the seniors from our town. It is subsidised by the council and only cost 38 Euro for the bus trip, morning tea, a guided tour of the city, lunch, a boat cruise on the Inn River and dinner in a beer garden in Linz. The weather was perfect and it turned out to be a delightful day. The city of Schärding has an incredibly long history and the area itself dates back to 15 BC. The river provides the border between Austria and Bavaria and ownership of the town had gone back and forth over the years. The current town dates back to 1429 and is beautifully preserved with many Baroque buildings. The photo shows the Silberzeile, a row of gabled houses in the city centre. Each one is painted a different colour, in keeping  with tradition. Many of the inhabitants of the time were illiterate so the different colours were a way of identifying numbers or addresses. Certain colours were also used to identify businesses, for example, blue identified bakers or confectioners, green for inns and wine sellers. The extra shows the colour version and our neighbours enjoying a traditional meal of roast pork for lunch
