Back when I first contemplated giving the bay tree in the back garden a proper vertical pruning a couple of years ago I was immediately thwarted by a pigeon deciding to nest in it. It still seemed to be using it last year but hasn't been about for a while, so anything more than eight feet above the ground was jigsawed off and stuffed into the back of the car to be taken tipwards. There should still be enough to anchor a clothesline to and to provide a bit of shade next to the back door. Next weekend will be the turn of the other tree on the other side which has similarly exceeded the small and decorative category intended by the previous resident's gardener.
