Patrimoine

It's the Journées du Patrimoine this weekend, and the association in Fabrezan that has recently launched a project to renovate the defensive Donjon was having an open day. So we went along; our arrival at the actual tower was delayed by meeting a stream of people we know on the same mission.

Truth to tell, there isn't a lot to see; the outer walls are in good shape, but there is nothing inside except for some old wine barrels and a wooden staircase too rickety to use (and there are no floors anyway). But there was an exhibition about the history of the tower and future plans for its renovation. Which rather astonishingly include building a four-story glass and metal skyscraper next to it to contain a lift and stairs. That will certainly change the character of this charming little square.

I didn't have an adequate lens to take a decent photo of either the inside or the whole of the outside; there's a photo of the outside here. And my blip is my offering for Derelict Sunday.

Back home S got to work roasting pork and making some truly excellent Yorkshire puddings. He decided to experiment with making them in silicone muffin tins instead of metal ones, and I had to eat my disparaging words about this technique when he took them out of the oven (see extra). Being from Yorkshire we had them as a starter with gravy, and for pudding with maple syrup and cream. Our first pork crackling for many years was good too.

This evening was the first book group meeting since June. K had picked A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book and was embarrassed because she hated it. No-one else liked it either. Still, it was nice to see each other and we had a good discussion about the many reasons we didn't like it. My turn to choose now ... no pressure.
