Ray of Sunshine

Sternbergia sicula, mimicking a crocus but in fact both larger  in flower and much more like a daffodil in it's make-up.  A green stem for the flower with the ovary up behind the flower and a true bulb, with in layers like an onion are obvious differences from a crocus.  In a crocus the stem and the ovary remain below ground at flowering time while the bulb is a solid mass of starchy material which is completely renewed each year.

These autumn gems are flower reliably in this hot, dry garden and certainly brighten up a dull day.

Choir tonight, accompanied by Amy who thoroughly enjoyed herself.  Bang goes Dad's night out on his own!  A had to join me as J is away
in Birmingham on another Ruth rescuing mission.  Things got very tricky indeed today :-(
