Dawn's early light

I had a very early appointment today, so early that the light of dawn was still seeping into the sky, and morning rush-hour traffic on the Fremont bridge was creeping along at five miles an hour--visible from windows where I stood. I gazed at the cranes, at the further construction of unaffordable housing, and wondered where they will live, in the new Portland: the waiters, cooks, painters, artists, school teachers, data entry people, musicians, single mothers, construction workers building these structures, and all the people who work as hard as they can all the days of their lives. Where will they live, where will they grow, when every inch of space is taken up with "luxury" condominiums and apartments? Where?
