Saxon hall house (under construction)

A new building at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Singleton, West Sussex.

Saxon and Viking history has been added to the National Curriculum, and a Saxon house is under construction - principally for the benefit of school children.

Most of the houses constructed at the Museum are "rescue" houses, but a few are reconstructions based on reliable archaeological information.

This house has two doors, its walls are of half-timbering with in-filling in wattle and daub.  It has no windows as such, but triangular holes at each gable end provide a little light and enable the smoke from the hearth to escape.

It is based on an archaeological dig in (I think!) Steyning.
