This photo was taken from the Scotsman Steps - an octagonal tower comprising 104 enclosed steps, with decorative iron and stonework on the walls.  The steps themselves lead down from the Scotsman Hotel to the street below.  The steps, built in 1899 fell into disrepair after the Scotsman newspaper moved out of the building but in 2011 they were renovated and reopened with a new lease of life. Each step has been created in a different colour of marble from different parts of the world.  Pink, grey, cream, green and blue marble from countries including Italy, India, China, Turkey and Croatia.
