Female Crane Fly

Our 20 month old grandson noticed "a bug" on the back wall of our house.  He never misses a thing when it comes to the tiny stuff.  I told him I would get a picture of it so he could see it better.   With a couple of extension tubes, this is what he could see.  I chose this image out of a few others because you could see clearly the ovipositor at the end of her abdomen.  This indicates a female as it uses this to deposit eggs into the ground or on plants.
Interestingly, crane flies do not eat.  The adult flies live only for a few days long enough to mate.  The larvae are the only eating forms.
