Dumfries House

A Palladian mansion house built 1754-59 by Robert and John Adam for the 5th Earl of Dumfries. It was saved for the nation in 2007 by HRH The Prince of Wales when the house and contents were about to be sold at auction.

The Great Steward of Scotland's Dumfries House Trust has been formed and is overseeing the restoration of the house and furnishings as well as the Estate.

Our first visit and a beautiful sunny day for it. I took this shot later in the afternoon. I particularly enjoyed the wonderful Chippendale furniture (with beautiful silks on the upholstery), the Murano coloured glass chandeliers, and the Tapestry Room with 18 domed skylights. The ceilings, plasterwork and internal decoration are impressive.

Work is on going around the Estate to restore the large walled garden, the Adam Bridge, and the Laundry Building. The Laundry will become the Prince's Drawing School, and other buildings will house training areas for stonemasons and craftsmen.

Definitely worth a visit, best to pre-book tours online. More information here. And I must mention that the house is not near Dumfries, but just outside Cumnock.
