Knossos

We visited Knossos something like twenty years ago and at that stage the original murals were still in place. We revisited yesterday and got so much out of our visit as we took one of the official tours. However the stereotypical image of a guide complete with umbrella striding forth ahead a group of unruly tourists could not be further from the truth. The group was limited to eight people and our guide took great care to find shady nooks and crannies to speak to us. She was also quite open about the limited amount of information there is about Minoan history because of the lack of textual remnants and therefore a written language which is as yet uncyphered. Most of the information that they have been able to gleam comes from interpretations of the murals. Although quite a bit of the site has been reconstructed using concrete it dos immediately evident what is original and was is added. The vast storage urns are very impressive. The bit of the murals I have chosen to blip is a griffin on the back wall of the throne room. I always marvel at the detail and colour digital cameras are able to give you once you have processed your image. Needless to say this mural was in heavy shade and bearable discernible with the naked eye
