Portuguese Patter

Wandered up a lane we'd not been up before, and ended up talking listening to this gentleman, who thinks the world is in a terrible state; the '74 revolution gave them freedom, but now people do terrible things, like kill their parents; but at least he could talk to strangers like us without fear of the PIDE (Salazar's police) putting him in jail - he wouldn't wish to go back to those days; and at least they don't go hungry now; and politicians are horrible all over the world, robbing the people to line their own pockets.

Meanwhile, his wife made comments from the nearby bench, and their peacocks, geese, turkeys, bald-necked chickens, and assorted dogs wandered about, and up the hill, a goat stood on tiptoes eating leaves.

Was rather heartened that I understood most of it.
