Wayland's Smithy Long Barrow

This was one of the most beautiful and evocative ancient sites we passed. You can't drive to this one, you have to walk, so there was no one there. It's on top of the ridge of the downs in a sheltered oval of huge trees, and the sense of history, of continuity, of utter peace, was incredible. People came here thousands of years ago to bury and honour their loved ones and I can't think of a better place. Remarkably and probably because you can't drive to it, but also I think because of the power of this place, there was no graffiti or rubbish, just utter beauty. It was perfect.
