Variations on a theme ...

Crocus speciosus ssp xantholaimos x pulchellus.

The two most easily grown autumn crocuses are Crocus pulchellus and Crocus speciosus, two closely related species which hybridise readily in cultivation.  This plant, although very close in appearance to Crocus pulchellus, is just such a hybrid.  It has the shape, style and deep yellow throat of Crocus speciosus subspecies xantholaimos and the white anthers of Crocus pulchellus.  The former is the seed parent while the latter provided the pollen.

A mostly quiet Saturday after Michael set off back to Portsmouth, Jamie (Amy) spent two hours doing wheelchair basketball and Jacinta was at a Recorder Day that she had organised.  Unfortunately Jamie now has a problem with severe back pain .... might be in for an outing to the hospital ...... :-( ....... hopefully not.
