Slime mould

This splendid slime mould, Tubulifera arachnoidea, was found on a mossy log during a work party at the nature reserve. This is the plasmodium stage in the remarkable life cycle of these fungus-like organisms, during which they can actually move (albeit very slowly) over objects in search of more food.
