Indigenous People's Day

The USA still celebrates an official holiday in honor of Christopher Columbus. When I was a young schoolgirl, I was taught that Columbus was brave and had vision, that he and his three little ships (we made models of them) crossed a terrifying ocean because he believed a new world was possible.

Al Jazeera has a more intelligent spin on it: "An assault on the sacredness of Columbus would, in short, be an assault on the idea that it’s all right to go to other people’s lands, take their stuff, and make them suffer - a modus operandi that applies not only to Latin America but also beyond, as inhabitants of Iraq and other locations can presumably attest." (Thanks to Ceridwen for posting the link on FB.) http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2016/10/christopher-columbus-myth-giving-161005051835083.html

Portland has done away with Columbus Day and now calls the day Indigenous People's Day. The mentality is harder to do away with.

The shingle is for an art gallery with artist studios and a wine bar. I have no idea what their politics may be.
